Cooper University Hospital Announces Membership to Health-Records Exchange

Three major health systems plan to join with primary-care providers to create exchange in an otherwise competitive market

CAMDEN, N.J.- Cooper University Hospital today announces their membership to the health-records exchange giving doctors access to patients’ medical records.

They are joining Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center, Virtua Health and most primary-care providers in the city to create this system, called the Camden Health Information Exchange, in an otherwise competitive medical center market.

“We are doing this out of concern for those we treat every day so that they get the best care possible,” said Anthony Mazzarelli, medical director of the emergency department at Cooper University Hospital. “This system allows doctors to give more timely and informed care. If you are working with patient with a complicated health history, but you have no idea what that history is, you are not well-equipped to make the types of decisions necessary.”

Getting off the ground, the exchange will cost $210,000 in the first years and an additional $85,000 for the next two years. However, those involved hope to cut costs by getting rid of unnecessary tests and helping doctors better manage each patients’ care.

Patients will first have to give permission before other doctors are able to view their data and in the initial phase the exchange would allow providers to see information, but not add to it except through Noteworthy Medical Systems. It will evolve to easily allow doctors and hospitals to add information down the road.

Cooper University Hospital’s participation in the Camden Health Information Exchange will allow more informed and specific care by their doctors which leads to better care for their patients.
